Rabbi George Vida (1906-1989) was born and raised in Hungary. In 1930, he married Emmie Koppel (1909-2002). A newly ordained Rabbi, George and his young wife first served a congregation in the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia. They remained there until the Germans began annexing Czechoslovakia. The Vidas arrived in the United States in 1938. Rabbi Vida worked for congregations on the east coast and in the 1960s served for three years as an Army Chaplain in Germany. He retired in 1973 and, with Emmie, moved to Berkeley, California, where both were active members of Congregation Beth El.
